Porin Vesi (Pori Water Utility) in Pori has chosen the new Kemira Kemicond system to be used in the city's sludge handling and disposal. The decision has been made for a period of ten years.
The Luotsinmäki waste water treatment plant in Pori treats sewage water from the city and from major industries in the area. Local environmental authorities have demanded a long-term sustainable solution for the disposal of sludge from Luotsinmäki.
The treatment capacity corresponds to 250,000 people. Kemira will install a chemical sludge treatment unit called Kemicond which will make the sewage sludge odour free and hygienised. Sludge volumes will be reduced, and the end product will be used for landscaping a landfill area in the plant site of Kemira Pigments in Pori, says Göran Karlsson, Vice President, Kemwater Sludge Management.
The first plant using the Kemicond technology will be started in Stockholm at the beginning of next year. The decision made by Pori Water Utility to use Kemicond is a breakthrough for Kemicond on the Finnish market. We have many other potential customers for the technology," says Aija Jantunen, Manager - Kemwater Finland. From the beginning of May 2006 there will be new demands for the sludge to be utilized in agriculture or in the construction of green areas. Kemicond offers an efficient technology for solving problems in the treatment of waste water sludge globally.
Earlier this year Porin Vesi invited companies potentially interested in participating in a public tender to offer long term solutions for sludge handling. The Pori Water Utility has decided that from 2007 on, sludge handling will be managed in cooperation with Kemira Kemwater.
Applications for an environmental permit will be submitted as soon as possible.
