American Bio-PAPPEL International won the 'Forest Industry Oscar'

The PPI Prize of RISI (RISI is the leading information provider for the global forest products industry) have been awarded. PPI-Award is 'the chemical forest industry Oscar', which is awarded in several categories to recipients demonstrating leadership, visionary talent, innovativeness, and strategic insight in the pulp and paper industry sector. Kemira has been given the honor of host the Water Efficiency Award for pulp and paper mills and Bio-PAPPEL International, Prewitt Mill, from the United States won it this year.

"The Water Efficiency Award is awarded in recognition of development work done in improving efficiency in water quality and quantity management at pulp and paper mills. We greatly appreciate having the honor of hosting this award because products and applications related to the management of water quality and volume are at the core of our strategy, said Kenneth Nystén," SVP, head of Paper’s Printing & Writing customer segment, at the awards ceremony held in Brussels on 15.11.2011.

The winner of The Water Efficiency Award was announced by Kenneth Nystén and the hostess and presenter of the gala Anne De Baetzelier.

Altogether twelve PPI awards are being handed out. This is the only international competition that is participated in by chemical forest industry companies, production plants, and persons employed by the companies. And so, the event could be alikened to the Oscars of the motion picture industry.

The winner of the category hosted by us was Kemira’s American customer Bio-PAPPEL International, which had demonstrated convincing results in reducing water consumption at the company’s Prewitt Mills. Bio-PAPPEL’s 'fiercest' competition came from South Korea, India, Mexico, and from Caraustar (United States).

The jury’s decision as to the winner was influenced most of all the fact that the winning production plan uses certified raw materials in its production, is engaged in improving its water consumption, recycles its water with efficiency, and efficiently treats its process waters before releasing them back into the environment.

The finalists in the Water Efficiency Award category were:

  • AbitibiBowater, Mokpon Mills, South Korea
  • Caraustar, Carotell Paperboard, United States
  • BILT Graphic Paper Products, Bhigwan Unit, India
  • Bio-PAPPEL International, Prewitt Mills, United States
  • Smurfit Kappa Group, Los Reyes Mills, Mexico
