Organized by RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry, the PPI Awards program honours leadership, vision, innovation and strategic accomplishments within the pulp and paper industry. Kemira was one of the category sponsors for the 2010 PPI Awards. Kemira hosted a Water Efficiency Award tailored to the company and a Spanish customer, Holmen Paper Madrid, won it for the mill’s work on efficiencies and reductions in water consumption.
“Our award ‘Water efficiency’ recognizes the development work done at pulp and paper mills all over the world in order to enhance the water quality and quantity management. WQQM related products and applications are also the core of our strategy”, says Petri Helsky, President, Kemira Paper.
The prestigious accolade is one of 12 announced at the PPI Awards. The competition is the only global contest that presents awards to and puts the spotlight on companies, mills and individuals in the paper and pulp industry. It can be compared to the film industry’s ‘Oscars’.
Holmen Paper Madrid won against tough competition from factories in Denmark, Brazil, Canada and the USA. The judges were looking for the mill that had clearly cut usage of raw water and made best possible use of process water filtration, circulation and reuse.
The finalists for the Water Efficiency Award were:
- ArjoWiggins Graphic, Dalum Papir, Denmark
- Bio-PAPPEL International, Prewitt Mill (formerly McKinley Paper), USA
- Cascades Fine Papers Group, Breakey Fibre Unit, Canada
- Holmen Paper Madrid, Spain
- Lwarcel Celulose, Lencois Paulista Mill, Brazil
The PPI Awards took place on mid November in Brussels to celebrate the only global awards dedicated to recognizing the achievements of companies, mills and individuals in the pulp and paper sector.

The award, presented by Petri Helsky, was accepted by Francisca Pérez (middle), environmental manager at Holmen Paper Madrid. "We are extremely pleased with this award. It recognizes the importance of our work on cutting water consumption," says Francisca Pérez. The hostess and presenter of the gala was Anne De Baetzelier, former Miss Belgium (on the right).
