Kemira has (18th June, 2008) received a grant of EUR 400 000 from the Finnish Ministry of Environment for more efficient phosphorus removal at the St Petersburg North wastewater treatment plant. St. Petersburg Water Works and the Finnish Ministry of Environment are Kemira’s partners in the project.
As a result of the new method of phosphorus removal and as more wastewater is fed into the plant over the coming years, the phosphorus loads entering the Gulf of Finland will decline by almost 10% (600 tonnes a year). The new phosphorus removal facilities should be up and running by the end of 2009.
Kemira and St. Petersburg Water Works signed in 2006 an agreement extending to the year 2015 and having the objective of developing and producing new chemicals in St. Petersburg to be used in producing drinking water and cleaning waste water. Trial procedures conducted by Kemira Oyj have accelerated the implementation of phosphorus removal at six wastewater treatment plants, including the St Petersburg Central plant – the city’s largest.
Kemira has a production plant ZAO Kemira Eko in St. Petersburg, which produces annually approximately 100 000 tons of chemicals for drinking and waste water treatment. The major customer is St. Petersburg Water Works.
Kemira’s water treatment chemical business is the world’s leading supplier of inorganic coagulants and ranks third in water treatment polymers.
