SPCI Exhibition in Stockholm: Kemwhite-pigments create savings in papermaking

Kemira has been engaged in cooperation with Nordic forest-industry companies and research institutions for several decades. New projects are on-going at numerous Swedish and Finnish forest-industry companies. The Kemwhite family of calcium sulfate pigments products is a recent addition to Kemira’s product offering. It is superior in efficiency and quality in the coating of paper and as a filler pigment.

Kemira’s expertise starts with pulp manufacture and bleaching. Complete solutions for the paper machine wet end include retention chemicals, deposit control agents, biocides, water treatment chemicals, and sizing agents. Filler pigments, coating pigments, colorants, fluorescent whitening agents and chemicals for recycled fibers are also part of our competence area. Our customers’ energy, fiber raw material and water consumption can be significantly reduced by developing their process automation and offering them chemical solutions.

Kemira’s solutions cover all customer segments, be it a question of pulp, wood-free or wood-containing printing papers, tissue papers or board products. Know-how in regard to fiber recycling is yet another of our strengths.

Total Whitening and Kemwhite pigments

Pigments are part of Kemira’s Total Whitening concept, which covers the products and know-how from pulping to paper coater (bleaching chemicals, brighteners, fluorescent whitening agents, and coating and filler pigments).

Kemira has developed the new Kemwhite calcium sulfate crystallization technology together with Finnish forest-industry companies and various research bodies within the forest cluster. The customer gets exactly the kind of pigment solutions, which are best suited for their paper or board machine, and end product.

By choosing a Kemwhite pigment solution, papermakers can achieve annual savings of several million euros on a single machine. Among the applications are LWC, MWC and MFC printing papers, and various coated fine paper and cardboard grades.

Light in color and light in weight, Kemwhite -pigments enable the filler content of paper to be increased by as much as 4%. This means reduced fiber consumption while reaching the same or even improved paper strength properties. In addition, paper whiteness and opacity are enhanced.

When developing Kemwhite pigments, special attention has been paid to maintain good runnability of paper machines. The products are suitable for both acidic and neutral process environments, and they do not require specific production breaks for adjustment, like conventional pigments such as calcium carbonate and kaolin.
