Water footprint

Water in a kitchen sinkTo be able to save water, we need to know what consumes it. The water footprint is an indicator that serves this purpose. Did you know that producing a cup of coffee consumes nearly as much water as taking a bath?

Clean water scarcity has become a major global challenge: as many as two billion people suffer from water shortage. That is why many people and companies are willing to reduce their water consumption.

Saving water, however, is more complicated than it first appears. If we skip a bath, for example, we save some 150 liters of water. But if we skip a burger, we save approximately 2,400 liters of water!

Furthermore, saving water is more important in countries suffering from water shortage than in countries with ample clean water reserves. From a global viewpoint, the most densely populated areas are the ones with poor water reserves.
