Development organization Plan

Plan is an international humanitarian development organization that achieves lasting improvements in the quality of life of children in developing countries. Plan has no political, governmental or religious affiliations. Plan has been working for and on behalf of children for 70 years, and its awareness-raising activities in Finland began in 1998. Today Plan is active in 66 countries worldwide and has adopted 1.3 million godchildren, through which it reaches more than 15 million children and their families in developing countries.

Kemira and Plan co-operate to support children’s right to water, health and development by arranging concrete projects in different countries.

“A water related responsibility target was a natural choice for Kemira, which concentrates more and more on water related chemistry based on its new strategy”, says Leena Lie, Kemira's VP of Marketing and Communications. “Water is one of the most important prerequisites for life and clean water is a basic requirement for us. The right to water is also closely related to basic human rights”, she continues.

The Kemira - Plan co-operation also gives Kemira’s employees the opportunity to take part in the activities through Plan’s country organizations and to arrange for example events in the several countries where Kemira has representation. It is important that the co-operation is of shared interest among all employees and that everyone has the possibility to contribute.

“The co-operation with Plan in global development projects strengthens Kemira’s position as a good global citizen and gives the corporation an opportunity to contribute to the global well-being through its own water know-how”, says Harri Kerminen, Kemira’s CEO. ”The co-operation unites the core competences of Kemira and Plan in an excellent way”, Plan’s Secretary General Riitta Weiste adds.

Plan and Kemira: a Partnership for Water

Kemira works in co-operation with Plan, one of the oldest and largest children's development organisations in the world. Kemira and Plan work together to safeguard children's rights to water, health and development through special projects in Ethiopia, Bolivia and India.

  • The programme focusing on the survival and development of children in Ethiopia divides its efforts between improving water and sanitation services and preventing diseases of infancy and childhood.
  • An early education programme in Bolivia promotes comprehensive child development beginning at pregnancy. This includes training parents and foster parents in providing a stimulating environment, proper nutrition and clean water in early childhood, and in the importance of hygiene.
  • The objective in India is to contribute to rural school children in having good hygiene practices and adequate school water and sanitation (WASH) infrastructure and provide dedicated facilities for girls.

Clean water saves lives

Clean water is a human right: the right to life, personal development and an adequate standard of living is meaningless without water. If water is available and rights are respected, however, then water is capable of saving lives and even preventing population displacement. This is the goal in places like Ethiopia, where Kemira is working for clean water in partnership with the development co-operation organisation Plan.
