Co-product feeds from the processed food, dairy and beverage industries can, along with other biomaterials, be used to provide valuable nutrients when added to animal feed. This results in an enhanced hygienic quality of the feed. Protein based raw materials, from animal or vegetable origin, are frequently contaminated by Salmonella and other entero-bacteria. By lowering the pH in the feed pathogenic bacteria are prevented from entering in the crop or stomach and the intestinal tract. Animal performance may thus be improved, and preventing contamination of bacteria like Salmonella enhances increased food safety.
