Clarification & Dewatering

Kemira’s chemical solutions for water clarification and sludge dewatering systems enhance performance of solid/liquid separation operations, increasing cake solids, improving water clarity, treating oily waters, reducing odors, and in general allowing for more efficient operation.

Most refinery clarification processes include the removal of suspended solids and emulsified oils. Our large selection of inorganic and organic coagulants, flocculants, clarifiers, de-oilers and demulsifiers permits us to tailor treatments to any of your processes, such as:

  • Settling clarifiers
  • Dissolved air flotation units
  • Induced air flotation units
  • API separators
  • Cyclones

Refinery sludges, even in their most concentrated form, contain too much water for economical or convenient disposal. Mechanical methods of reducing this water concentration, thereby increasing the solids concentration, are termed sludge dewatering. The most common methods of sludge dewatering are:

  • Belt filter press
  • Screw press
  • Centrifuge
  • Plate & frame filter press
  • Vacuum filters

In many cases, the dewatering devices are unable to perform to any appreciable degree without the use of chemical treatment. Our flocculant program can reduce the amount of solids hauled, increase the BTU value of the cake if burned, and at the same time allow you to recycle water lower in solids removing a potential burden on your biological wastewater system.
