Refinery sludges, even in their most concentrated form, contain too much water for economical or convenient disposal. Mechanical methods of reducing this water concentration, thereby increasing the solids concentration, are termed sludge dewatering. The most common methods of sludge dewatering are:

In many cases, the dewatering devices are unable to perform to any appreciable degree without the use of chemical treatment.
