Fillers
Mineral fillers are cheaper than wood fibers, which makes them an attractive raw material in paper and board production. They are also used to increase properties such as whiteness, opacity, brightness and printability.
Kemira Kemwhite is a new line in light-weight filler pigments that provide paper and board with a unique combination of brightness, whiteness and strength. Kemwhite filler is generated from calcium sulfate, which is crystallized to the desired particle shape and size.
The pigment can be tailored to the optimum porosity needed for very light paper with excellent printing properties. It is most suitable for bright paper grades such as LWC, MWC and MFC printing papers, coated fine papers and various types of paperboard.
Kemwhite has been developed by Kemira, in close cooperation with paper industry partners. Our unique crystallization technology is suitable for both on- and off-site production. We are ready to help you explore the benefits our calcium sulfate coating applications can offer your specific process and development needs.
Kemwhite filler benefits
- Economy:
- Fiber replacement – calcium sulfate allows high filler content in paper and board
- Binder replacement – calcium sulfate allows a reduced amount of binders in the coating color, entailing savings of up to 20%
- Lighter pigments – more paper and board for the same weight.
- Sustainability: Since calcium sulfate pigments are made from industrial by-products, the production chain does not require traditional mining.
- Logistics: Since we have strong partners in logistics, we are able to operate close to paper industry customers all over the world. Customers can also utilize local raw material sources for on-site production when applicable.
- Product information: Kemwhite FP is a filler pigment of platy crystals with an average particle size of 1,2–1,4 µm. The brightness is 95–96% and dry solid content 50%.
