Sodium Chlorate
The main end use of sodium chlorate is on-site production of chlorine dioxide, a key bleaching agent for the environmentally friendly ECF (elemental chlorine free) chemical pulping process. Chlorine dioxide can be produced from sodium chlorate using different reducing agents (i.e., hydrogen peroxide, sulfur dioxide, methanol, and hydrochloric acid).
Consumption of sodium chlorate continues to grow world wide in the pulp and paper industry. Other important application areas are in agriculture as herbicide and mining industry.
We have production sites for sodium chlorate in Finland, South-Eastern USA and Uruguay. Our manufacturing processes are designed to produce high quality sodium chlorate, with little or no trace products that could be harmful to chlorine dioxide production. Our own patented electrolysis cell technology is the most efficient production technology available, based on a reliable electrolyzer combining high availability with low electricity consumption.
Kemira is one of the largest producers of sodium chlorate in the world.
