Printing & Writing

When competing with electronic media, printing and writing paper producers aim at excellent colour reproduction. The main paper properties affecting colour reproduction are ink adsorption, paper whiteness and shade, for which Kemira has developed several unique technologies.

Our gypsum pigment technology combined with FWA, dyes and bleaching concepts offers possibilities to achieve desired paper whiteness and shade in the most cost efficient way. Our KemForm retention technology enables a uniform ash distribution, higher filler loadings and improved dewatering characteristics. We are also the leader in hydrophobation technologies for graphic papers.

The global production capacity of graphic papers is roughly 160 million tonnes per year: newsprint 40 million, office paper 40 million, publication paper 45 million and commercial printing paper 35 million. Global demand is roughly 150 million tonnes, and the demand is estimated to grow by 2-3 %, mainly in Eastern Europe, Latin America, India and China.

The consumption of paper per capita is still highest in North America (128 kg/capita), Japan (125 kg/capita) and Western Europe (105 kg/capita). Latin America, China and other Asia are at 8-12 kg/capita. Looking at consumption growth, Asia is already the dominant region for newsprint and the fastest growing region for both uncoated and coated printing and writing grades.
