Focusing on cost reduction will continue, with Kemira offering magazine paper producers an array of technologies for addressing cost reductions. Fiber replacement is a key issue and, in this respect, Kemira Kemwhite fillers offer great savings potential. Combined with Kemira KemForm retention technology and Kemira strength enhancement programs, filler loading can be increased by 2-5 % depending on the furnish mix and machine configuration. Kemwhite pigments for coating applications offers savings potential through reduced binder demand. Kemira also offers unique possibilities of examining synergistical whiteness development all the way from pulping and bleaching concepts to FWA, tinting dyes and pigments.
World production of magazine paper totals roughly 45 million tonnes per year. Magazine paper includes uncoated mechanical grades (SC paper), coated mechanical grades (LWC, MWC) and to some degree low grammage coated woodfree grades (70-90 gsm). Structural overcapacity, mainly in Western Europe, has hit magazine paper profitability very hard over recent years. Due to capacity closures, the supply/demand balance for magazine paper has improved, helping to offset the rapid increase in wood and energy costs.
