What are friction reducers?

Friction reducers (also known as drag reducers) are the main additive in hydraulic fracturing fluids, designed to reduce fluid-friction in piping during a stimulation process.

How do friction reducers work?

The friction in stimulation is caused by the turbulent flow of the frac fluid. Friction reducers reduce fluid flow turbulence by viscosifying the fluid and making the flow more laminar. This results in less horsepower needed to pump the fluid.

What are friction reducers made of?

Friction reducers are typically anionic or cationic polyacrylamide polymers, and the product forms vary from dry powder to emulsion solutions.

What are high viscosity friction reducers?

High viscosity friction reducers (HVFR) generate more fluid viscosity than typical friction reducers, not only to reduce friction, but also to suspend and transport proppant deep into the fractures in order to keep the fractures open.
