Wiping water spill with a tissue.

Tissue

Strength, softness and absorbency are the required properties for many tissue products. Working together with you, we can analyze your process to introduce the desired functionality into the sheet with the help of chemistry. We can also improve your costs for raw materials and energy, and help with the hygiene and cleanliness of your tissue operations.

Strength

Creating the right strength properties into your tissue sheet is critical, but sometimes difficult without causing unwanted side effects in the product or the process.

Kemira provides a spectrum of strength aids and technical support to develop your tissue products portfolio. We work closely with you to create a tailor-made strength package for your specific grade and machine. This includes wet- and dry-strength additives and functional promoters that give the sheet the right properties, without unwanted side effects.

We’ll help you take advantage of the complex wet end and sheet quality cause-and-effect relations that occur with strength additives in tissue making, and in avoiding difficulties like felt filling and other negative effects. We can also assist in finding the best, most cost-effective solutions to temporary wet strength (TWS), flushability and repulpability.

Softness

Softness is often seen as the most desirable tissue property, and at the same time, it is among the least measurable and controllable. But, this is changing.

Today, your ability to measure tissue softness is improving remarkably thanks to advanced new monitoring techniques. Technologies such as Kemira KemView sheet structure analyzer let us view and measure numerous characteristics like crepe bar frequency and length, and free-fiber end-counts, both of which have important impact on softness.

This new technology gives us a completely new window into understanding and controlling softness within tighter specs. It offers opportunities such as reducing the use of expensive long fiber, or modifying the creping blade operation in creative ways, while still meeting softness targets. Combined with our extensive softness chemistry expertise, we can keep softness firmly on target in a tighter range, to squeeze big costs out of your production process.

Hygiene

Tissue products require the absolute highest levels of cleanliness. This is not only demanded by customers, but is also legally regulated in many countries like, for example, the FDA in the USA and BfR in Germany. Having bacteria or spores in the final tissue products that exceed the limits can be disastrous for tissue companies and brands.

To reach superior levels of hygiene, both within your machine operation and in your finished products, Kemira has very fast-acting microbiological control technology with proven track records. On your machine, a clean whitewater loop is the key to improving runnability, decreasing downtime and assuring your products are hygienic and free of contamination. To help you do this, we offer deep R&D expertise and worldwide applications experience.

Our innovative microbiological control technology provides extremely high levels of cleanliness as well as reduced slime deposit breakaways, improved felt conditioning, reduced high-pressure showering and felt vacuum levels and faster running speeds – sustainably and safely.
