Kemira Oyj Press release, September 17, 2025 at 8.00 am EEST
Kemira today announced that its previously communicated plan to build a reactivation plant for activated carbon at the Helsingborg site in Sweden has received full investment approval. This strategic decision marks a major step forward in Kemira’s efforts to expand its water treatment capabilities across the Nordic region, invest in activated carbon as a new growth area, and advance its long-term goal to double the size of its water treatment business.
The new plant, which will require a low double-digit million-euro investment, is designed to reactivate spent granular and pelletized activated carbon, enabling reuse in drinking water and wastewater treatment applications. This technology plays a critical role in removing various residues from water, for example micropollutants, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), otherwise known as ‘forever chemicals’, which are increasingly regulated across Europe.
“This approval allows us to move forward with building new capacity that strengthens our water treatment offering,” said Tuija Pohjolainen-Hiltunen, EVP, Water Solutions, Kemira. “As regulations tighten, especially around PFAS, we are proud to support our customers with sustainable and efficient solutions.”
The plant is expected to be operational in the second half of 2027, subject to final permits and construction timelines.
This announcement comes at a special moment for the Helsingborg site which, in 2025, celebrates its 150th anniversary. Over the decades, it has evolved into a hub for sustainable chemical production, contributing not only to Kemira’s growth but also to the economic and social vitality of the Helsingborg region.
