Kemira signs a new wind power deal to further reduce GHG emissions

Kemira and Statkraft have signed a new 10 year power purchase agreement to deliver 43.8 GWh renewable wind energy per year to Kemira’s Finnish sites. The wind power is sourced from the Statkraft’s Harbaksfjellet wind farm in Norway. It is part of Europe’s largest onshore wind project, the Fosen Wind. The first renewable energy purchase agreement between Kemira and Statkraft was signed in 2020.

Kemira has set an ambitious climate target of 30% reduction in combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, by 2030 and pledged to be carbon neutral by 2045. A majority of these Scope 2 emissions come from the purchaced energy. In order to achieve the sustainability targets it is important to increase the amount of purchased energy from renewable, zero-emission sources. This new agreement increases the percentage of zero-emission energy purchased for Kemira’s operations in Finland from 34 to 41%.

“We are continously improving our operations and take steps to reach our sustainability targets. Purchasing renewable energy is part of the options that we are implementing. The key solutions that will enable us to meet our ambition of carbon neutrality by 2045 also include switching to renewables for heat and steam generation, electrification of processes, and energy efficiency at our sites”, says Thierry Blomet, SVP Sourcing at Kemira.
